Client port

Our client port allows you to quickly and easily get connected to the virtual network. You can connect using either OpenVPN or a PPTP client. Access using PPTP is probably the easiest way to get started, while OpenVPN provides you with more advanced and secure configuration options.

PPTP access

Warning: the PPTP will by default take over your default route. This means that you are no longer able to access the internet (for now at least).

Quick configuration

Windows configuration

  1. Open the Windows network interfaces 'folder'
  2. Click 'Create a new connection' in the left side bar
  3. Click next
  4. Select 'Connect to a corporate network', click next
  5. Select 'VPN connection', click next
  6. Enter a name for the connection, 'UCIS IX', for example, and click next
  7. Select to 'Not automatically connect to another connection', click next
  8. Enter the VPN server name: 'anocp.ucis.nl', click next
  9. Click Finish
  10. Enter the username: 'anonet', leave the password field empty
  11. Click 'Connect'

Using OpenVPN

On Windows

  1. Install OpenVPN from openvpn.net (we recommend to use the latest Windows Installer).
  2. Download the configuration files from http://ix.ucis.nl/clientport.tgz.
  3. Extract all the files and directories contained in the archive into "C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config\" (or where ever else you have installed OpenVPN).
  4. Rename the file "anocp.conf" to "anocp.ovpn".
  5. Start the VPN by double-clicking the anocp.ovpn file.

On Linux

Warning: these instructions are written for use on a Debian based system. The procedure for installing software and the location ofthe configuration files may be different on your Linux distribution!

  1. Install OpenVPN: apt-get install openvpn
  2. cd /etc/openvpn
  3. wget http://ix.ucis.nl/clientport.tgz
  4. tar -xvzf clientport.tgz
  5. /etc/init.d/openvpn start

On Mac OS X (using tunnelblick)

Warning: we did not actually test this procedure, but some people have reported that it does work.

  1. Install tunnelblick
  2. Download and extract http://ix.ucis.nl/clientport.tgz to '~/Library/Application Support/Tunnelblick/Configurations/'
  3. Move the files from the anocp/ subdirectory to the parent directory, so that all files are in '~/Library/Application Support/Tunnelblick/Configurations/'
  4. Edit the anocp.conf file in a text editor, and remove the 'anocp/' part from the 'ca', 'cert' and 'key' lines
  5. Use tunnelblick GUI to connect to the anocp VPN

Now what?
